Stop & Shop announced that it will be closing the doors on 32 of its underperforming grocery stores across five New England states by the end of the year.
The community grocery chain, which is owned by Ahold Delhaize USA Company, released plans Friday for closures in these states:
- Connecticut: 5 stores
- Massachusetts: 8 stores
- New Jersey: 10 stores
- New York: 7 stores
- Rhode Island: 2 stores
“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” Stop & Shop President, Gordon Reid, said. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”
The grocery stores in the five states are expected to close on or before Nov. 2. The closures will be completed on a rolling basis, the release said.
The chain said it will continue to operate 350 of its stores in the five states.

Will the Stop & Shop employees lose their jobs?
Stop & Shop employs 58,000 people and operates approximately 400 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, the release said.
A spokesperson told USA TODAY that they are working with their employees before the stores close.
“The associates at the 32 impacted stores are all being offered other opportunities within the company,” Caroline Medeiros, corporate communications manager at Stop & Shop said in a statement. “We will communicate specific store closing dates to local customers well in advance of any store closures.”

Future plans for Stop & Shop
Although the company has announced the closure of 32 stores in five New England states, the grocery chain is looking ahead at future plans.
"I would like to share – although this news is difficult, we are proud that we are retaining our associates and of the investments we are making in the Stop & Shop brand for future growth, especially in delivering lower prices and improving customer experience through remodels," Medeiros said. "Since 2018, we have completed more than 190 store remodels, with the customer shopping experience in mind and these stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that haven’t been remodeled."
